The immigrant visa process, whether it is for the benefit of a spouse, parent, child or other relative, generally has two phases. The first involves assembling an effective petition package which is submitted to USCIS for approval. The average time frame for approval depends on the service center that is handling the file, though the time generally ranges from between 2 and 5 months as of October of 2016.
The next phase involves payments of additional processing fees, and the submission of additional documentation to the National Visa Center. The fees are paid online which is relatively convenient. Fortunately, NVC also accepts photocopies of required documents such as birth certificates and police clearances, and no longer requires originals. One NVC receives and reviews all required documents following the fee payment, it then forwards the file to the appropriate embassy and waits for notification of an available interview date. This phase of the process can be the most frustrating, because the client has likely already waited a number of months and is anxious to schedule the interview. Typically it takes about 60 days from the time that NVC receives documents before the interview is scheduled.
An experienced immigration lawyer can make these phases flow seamlessly and as expeditiously as possible. Call Alexander Law Firm today to discuss your case.
